The festival of Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava or Sharod Utsav, pays homage to the goddess Durga and is celebrated because of Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. One of the most captivating aspects of Durga Puja is the artistry that crafts a vibrant narrative of devotion, creativity, and community celebration. People from all walks of life come together to celebrate, forgetting their differences. Each pandal tells a story; some showcase traditional while others display contemporary issues. Artists and craftsmen create detailed sculptures and elaborate decorations. Walking through these artistic creations feels like wandering through a dreamscape, making pandal-hopping an experience rich with discovery. 

Let’s explore some of Siliguri’s Durga Puja theme pandals of 2024.

Subrata Sangha Club

Durga Puja celebration at the Subrata Sangha Club in Siliguri marks the 67th edition of their festivities. The theme, “Drishtikon” (Perspective), is inspired by the idea to explore the rich tapestry of life through various lenses, highlighting how diverse viewpoints and perspectives impact our understanding. The intricate design of the Puja Mandap will be a visual treat, crafted by talented artists from Medinipur, focusing on social and eco-friendly materials. With the expected influx of visitors, the club has prioritized safety, implementing extensive CCTV surveillance throughout the area to ensure a secure environment for everyone.

Haiderpara Sporting Club

Haiderpara Sporting Club will be celebrating its 55th year with a thought-provoking theme: “Bondi Shoisab” (Childhood Caged) that deeply resonates in an age where digital distractions can overshadow interpersonal connections. The theme addresses a significant societal concern: the excessive use of mobile devices by children. “Bondi Shoisab” serves as a poignant reminder to parents and guardians to reflect on their children’s screen time and to prioritize enriching experiences that foster creativity, social skills, and emotional well-being. To ensure the safety and security of all, the Haiderpara Sporting Club has installed CCTV cameras across the venue.

Dada Bhai Sporting Club

Dada Bhai Sporting Club, in its 34th year of celebration, has unveiled a captivating theme titled “Pathore Pran” (Even Stones Have Life). The pandal has been constructed using around 20 tons of stone, wood, water, and trees, which serves as a striking reminder of the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. Each element of the pandal is designed to highlight the interconnectedness of life and the environment, showcasing the idea that even the most seemingly lifeless materials possess their own stories and significance.

Sanghashree Club

The theme of Sanghashree Club encapsulates a strong message ‘Thakbo Nako Boddho Ghore, Dekhbo Ebar Jogot Take,’ which translates to ‘We will not stay confined, we will explore the world.’ This theme draws inspiration from a powerful verse by the renowned Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and seeks to address pressing societal issues.The pandal depicts a young girl yearning for an environment free from fear and evil. A dedicated team of artists has worked to bring the vision to life, utilizing eco-friendly materials like stables and palm leaves for the decorations.

Rabindra Sangha Club

Celebrating its 72nd year of organizing Durga Puja festivities, Rabindra Sangha Club’s tagline, “Padhaaro Mhare Desh” (Welcome to My Land), offers a glimpse into Rajasthan’s rich heritage. The pandal features intricate designs and vibrant paintings. Every aspect of the pandal has been meticulously crafted by hand, emphasizing the traditional techniques and craftsmanship of Rajasthani artisans. The organizers are deeply committed to authenticity, with every element of the pandal reflecting traditional Rajasthani themes.

Bharat Nagar Sarbojonin Durga Puja Committee

The theme of Bharat Nagar Sarbojonin Durga Puja Committee is centered around ‘Kalsi Bhara Sonar Fasal’ (Basket Full of Golden Harvest). This unique theme not only celebrates the abundance of nature and the region’s rich agricultural heritage but also highlights the importance of sustainability through the use of Paat (jute), a versatile and eco-friendly material that has been a staple in local agriculture for generations. By incorporating Paat (jute) in their decorations and structures, the committee highlights the importance of sustainability and traditional craftsmanship.
