The changing sun: Navigating its benefits and risks in a polluted world

Sunlight, a source of life, has always been one of nature’s most profound gifts to humanity. It provides energy, warmth, and sustains plant growth, while also playing a critical role in generating solar power. For humans, sunlight is indispensable, enabling the production of Vitamin D, which supports strong bones, a healthy immune system, and mental well-being. Just a few minutes of daily exposure can brighten moods and enhance overall health.

But today, sunlight isn’t what it used to be. With pollution and climate change, the sunlight we rely on has changed in ways that aren’t always good. On one hand, it still helps us stay healthy, happy, and energized. On the other hand, it has also become more dangerous in some ways. UV rays are divided into three types- UVA, UVB and UVC. While UVC is filtered out by the atmosphere, UVA and UVB reach us, with UVA penetrating more into the skin and causing premature aging and UVB being essential for Vitamin D but also linked to skincare.

The sunlight we experience today is not the same as it was a decade ago. WHO talks about how the incidence of different types of skin cancer has been growing dramatically over the past decades and how people are claiming that this may be because of ozone depletion and enhanced levels of UV.

Pollution, climate change, and increasing UV radiation have altered its quality, forcing us to reconsider how we interact with this vital resource.

So many people today are deficient in Vitamin D. This deficiency is now regarded as a pandemic. This is because people aren’t aware about the moderate exposure to sun which is the major source of vitamin D for most humans and it is estimated that around a billion people worldwide have this. In urban areas, sunlight interacts with smog and other pollutants, making it harder for our skin and lungs to cope. Even the psychological boost we get from sunlight that lowers stress and improves mental well-being diminishes when pollution clouds the skies.

A big part of the problem is the ozone layer, which acts like Earth’s sunscreen, blocking out the most harmful UV radiation. Decades of industrial emissions and chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)have significantly weakened the ozone layer, allowing more harmful UVB and UVA rays to penetrate the atmosphere. Over the last ten years, UV radiation levels have increased globally mostly due to the ongoing ozone depletion and some regions have seen an increase of 2-6 UV levels compared to past decades. This has grown substantial enough to impact both our health and the environment.

How to safely benefit from Sunlight:

The good news is that sunlight is still incredibly valuable because it improves mood and reduces stress, with exposure to natural sunlight playing a crucial role in mental well-being. So despite the challenges posed by pollution and climate change, sunlight remains a vital part of maintaining good health. That is why we can harness its benefits by timing it right by seeking sunlight during the early morning or late afternoon when UV levels are lower because it allows us to enjoy the benefits of sunlight while minimizing exposure to harmful rays.

We should protect the skin by always using broad-spectrum sunscreen against both UVA and UVB rays. Wearing protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves, and using sunglasses further shields us from the sun’s damaging effects.

Choosing cleaner environments by seeking out less-polluted areas like parks or nature reserves will offer purer sunlight, minimizing the risks associated with polluted air.

We should also stay informed about the daily UV index using apps or local weather forecasts. This allows us to plan outdoor activities based on UV levels, ensuring safe exposure to sunlight.

The degradation of sunlight’s quality is a stark reminder of the need to address climate change and pollution. In order to preserve the health benefits of sunlight for future generations, it is critical that we take action to protect the ozone layer and reduce harmful emissions. Additionally, promoting clean energy solutions can help reduce air pollution and safeguard the purity of sunlight.

It is also essential to raise awareness about the dual nature of sunlight—its health benefits and the risks associated with overexposure. By taking small, responsible steps today, we can preserve sunlight’s benefits for ourselves and for generations to come. Striking the right balance between embracing the sun’s advantages and protecting ourselves from its dangers is the key to a healthier, happier future.

By understanding the changes in sunlight and the impact of pollution, we can continue to enjoy its benefits while minimizing risks. Let us embrace sunlight responsibly, and make it a part of a healthy lifestyle.
